[x]space is an interactive art making and exhibition space accessible to youth and community members of all ages. The “x” in [x]space is related to exchange, experimentation, Excelsior, and x as a variable. Visit us at the heart of the Excelsior at 5137 Mission Street, at Mission & Geneva.

About [x]space

Transformed from a meat market (Chuck’s Market) that was shuttered for nearly a decade, this space is focused on creative exchange between artists and community. It is an active arts center by Youth Art Exchange with free classes and programming for San Francisco public high school students, workshops, a youth printshop, Green Art Workshop, an ArtSpan artist studio, an art gallery, community meeting space, and venue rentals.

[x]space has been funded by the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Excelsior Collaborative, California Arts Council, Bothin Foundation, and Grants for the Arts (for ArtSpan’s artist studio).

How to get to [x]space:

Parking: There are usually a number of street spots in the blocks circling [x]space. We are close to the corner of Mission and Geneva streets. There is metered parking on Mission and Geneva, although there are a number of MUNI only left turns, so you may have to go a couple of blocks to take a left turn depending on where your starting point is. We tend to park on the surrounding streets like Amazon and Seneca. If you have anyone with limited mobility, it's best to double park to drop them off near the parking spots on Mission just past the bus zone, so you don't get a ticket.

To drop off: Coming off of 280 on Geneva, you can turn right on Alemany and a left on Mt. Vernon and a left on Mission to be able to be on the right side of the street for parking or drop off past the bus stop.

Public transit lines to Mission + Geneva: 8, 14, 43, 54 buses and we are about a 10 minute walk from the Balboa Park BART Station.
