A community arts center for all ages in San Francisco

From free youth programs to artist-led classes, exhibitions, and community gatherings — YAX is a place to create, connect, and belong.

Who We’re For

Youth Art Exchange serves San Francisco youth, artists, and community members across generations.

We primarily serve public high school students, the majority of whom are youth of color, and our staff and faculty reflect the communities we work with. Racial equity is central to how we design programs, build partnerships, and invest resources.

Beyond youth programming, our centers welcome adult learners, working artists, families, cultural practitioners, and neighbors seeking creative connection, skill-building, and community. Whether someone is attending a class, joining a drum circle, exhibiting work, or dropping into a community event, YAX is a place to belong.

What We Offer

Youth Programs (Afterschool + Summer Camp)

  • Youth Art Exchange’s free afterschool programs for public high school students are the foundation of our work. Led by professional artists, these programs support youth in developing creative, technical, and leadership skills while using art as a tool for self-expression and civic voice. In the summer, YAX also offers camp programming for 3rd–5th grade students, introducing younger youth to hands-on art making

  • Community Classes & Workshops

    • As a community arts center, YAX offers artist-led classes and workshops for adults and community members of all experience levels. From skill-based workshops to ongoing creative practices and cultural gatherings.

  • Exhibitions & Events

    • YAX hosts rotating exhibitions featuring local artists, alongside monthly community events such as drawing nights, open-mic nights, textile art drop-ins, and seasonal celebrations.

  • Space for Gathering & Creative Exchange

    • Beyond classes and programs, YAX is a place to spend time. Our centers provide welcoming, accessible spaces where youth, artists, and neighbors can meet, collaborate, and build relationships through shared creative practice.
