YAX TO THE MAX: Bringing Art + Community Closer Together

We’re opening two new art centers on the ground floor of two new 100% affordable Mission Neighborhood Development Corporation housing units: La Fénix in the Mission and Kapuso in the Excelsior’s new Balboa Upper Yard. After more than 20 years operating in borrowed, shared, and temporary spaces, these centers will significantly grow our capacity to offer youth places to learn, gather, exhibit - and thrive.

Our YAX to the MAX Capital + Capacity Campaign is based on nearly a decade years of exploration of our space needs, priority locations, collocation opportunities, and financial feasibility to meet our current needs and how we will grow.

We are raising $1.5 million to make this possible and we're halfway there! We need your support because Youth Art Exchange needs partners like you to build safe, welcoming, and creative spaces for San Francisco public high school students. Your gift will enhance YAX - to the max! Leave a lasting legacy and further Youth Art Exchange’s mission by pledging your support.

Partnership with Mission Housing

YAX and Mission Housing Development Corporation are partnering in a strategic & creative way. By YAX being on the ground level of affordable housing sites in the Mission (1950 Mission) and Excelsior (at the Balboa Upper Yard), more youth will have easier, closer, and deeper access to our programs. Approximately 20% of residents at La Fénix have experienced homelessness and increasing access to the arts for these youth and families is a priority for our work in San Francisco.

Driving Impact

We’ll be able to:
2x
our core student population
3x the number of artists we engage
3x the size of programming spaces

Professional amenities available for YOUTH + community use include:
Public, community-oriented event and gallery spaces
Flexibile Classrooms
Mobile Wood Shop
Fashion Studio
Printshop
Photography Darkroom
Music + Sound Production studio

Located just steps from public transportation hubs, both 1950 Mission Street and the Balboa Upper Yard sites will have specialized classrooms and places for youth to hang out and create connections. With galleries for exhibits and events, the new spaces will bring youth, their communities, and arts education supporters as well. Community spaces accessible to Youth Art Exchange will include a large common room, a catering kitchen, a courtyard for indoor-outdoor events, a rooftop garden, and more.
